Dry needling: what is it and when does it help?

Dry needling is a treatment technique in which we use a thin, sterile needle to target a cramped muscle. It sounds daunting, but many people experience fast relief. Here we explain what dry needling is, how it works and which complaints it suits.

What exactly happens?

With a thin needle we target a so-called trigger point: a cramped, sensitive spot in the muscle. By hitting that point, the muscle often relaxes at once. You may feel a brief twitch that quickly fades.

Does it hurt?

You usually barely feel the needle going in. Hitting a trigger point can be briefly sensitive. Afterwards the muscles may ache a little, similar to muscle soreness after exercise.

Which complaints does it help?

Dry needling can help with muscle pain, stiffness, headaches from the neck and sports injuries where tense muscles play a role. During the intake we assess whether it is useful for you.
